Top 10 Photographer Tips for ConsumersChoosing a photographer based on price alone is never a good idea and we’ve compiled our top 10 tips below to help you select the best photographer for any event. - Always ask to see their portfolio
Any professional photographer will have a comprehensive portfolio. This portfolio should showcase their best work and a range of styles. If you’re not impressed with what you see at this stage, then look elsewhere. - Speak to prospective photographers in person
We’ve all heard the stories about bossy photographers ruining people’s wedding days so it’s best to meet your photographer in person whatever the occasion is you need them for. This way you can get a feel for how friendly they are and whether or not they’ll be able to put people at their ease. - Be clear about what’s included
Whatever occasion you’re hiring a local photographer for, you need to be clear at the outset about how many prints you’re getting, what size of prints and whether or not you can get a CD with your chosen images. - Check out their references
Anyone can add a few glowing testimonials to their website but they may not be genuine or tell the whole story. For an important occasion like a wedding it’s a good idea to ask if you can speak directly to some of the photographer’s previous clients. - Ask if they’ll have an assistant with them
Following on from tip #2 it’s important to ask if the photographer is going to have an assistant with them. If this is the case you should ask to meet them too, so you know exactly who’s going to be around during your photo session. - Be clear about your requirements
Photographers aren’t mind readers so the more specific you can be about what style of photographs you want the better results you’ll get. - Get a written agreement
As with most arrangements between a customer and a supplier it’s best to get everything you’ve agreed with your photographer in writing before you agree to anything. The agreement should cover things like payment schedule, cancellation policy etc. - Ask about their qualifications & experience
Great photography is an art form and if you want quality photographs it’s a good idea to ask prospective local photographers about their qualifications and experience before you hire them. - Check where your photos will be used
Most photographers will retain the copyright on the photographs they take so if you aren’t keen on having your photos in the public domain, you should ask them if they intend to use your photographs on their website or other promotional materials. - Ask if they’re familiar with your venue
This tip is particularly relevant for weddings as many venues such as churches have strict regulations regarding photography that must be adhered to. If your local photographer has been to the venue before and knows their policies, it will prevent any potential problems on your big day.
